Iran Claims It Struck US Destroyer
In an official statement, the Iranian Navy's public relations office said the strike was carried out in direct response to what it characterized as American "aggressive actions," repeated violations of navigational regulations in the Strait of Hormuz, and sustained attacks on Iranian commercial shipping in the Gulf of Oman.
According to Tehran, its naval forces identified and moved against a US destroyer allegedly attempting to close in on Iranian territorial waters.
"The Navy of the Islamic Republic of Iran targeted the command-and-control center of these hostile actions, stationed aboard a US destroyer," the statement said.
Iran's Navy added that its forces remain in active surveillance mode, closely monitoring what it labeled "US-Zionist" military activity across the region, and issued an explicit warning that further retaliatory action would follow if provocation continued.
Within hours, US Central Command (CENTCOM) issued a blunt and categorical denial, dismissing Tehran's account entirely.
"Iran is lying. U.S. military assets at sea continue to fly, sail, and operate safely and unimpeded," CENTCOM said on US social media company X.
The dueling claims come amid a volatile backdrop of military brinkmanship in the Gulf region, with both sides trading accusations over attacks on commercial and naval vessels as diplomatic efforts to broker a broader agreement remain ongoing.
