Iran Receives First Revenue from Tolls Imposed on Hormuz
A member of parliament's presiding board disclosed to the agency that credible sources confirmed Iran has begun charging fees on passing maritime traffic.
Fee structures fluctuate based on vessel classification, cargo capacity, and risk assessments, the lawmaker explained, noting that Iranian authorities determine assessment criteria and collection procedures for these charges.
The official stated that revenues already accumulated through these levies are presently being transferred into the unified treasury account.
In related reporting, Hamidreza Haji-Babaei, a parliamentary deputy speaker, confirmed the inaugural Strait of Hormuz toll revenue deposit has been completed into the Central Bank account.
Iran intensified control over the Strait of Hormuz following joint Israeli and United States military operations against Iran on February 28. The United States subsequently implemented a naval blockade targeting Iranian-bound vessels after Islamabad peace negotiations disintegrated.
The strategic waterway serves as a critical chokepoint for global energy supplies, with approximately one-fifth of worldwide petroleum transit passing through the narrow strait connecting the Persian Gulf to international waters.
International maritime organizations have expressed concerns regarding the toll implementation's legality under international maritime law, though Iranian officials maintain sovereign authority over territorial waters within the strait's boundaries.
