Netanyahu to Request Trump’s Backing for Strikes on Iran
Earlier in June, both the United States and Israel carried out a coordinated aerial offensive against Iranian nuclear facilities.
This operation was launched despite prior evaluations from American intelligence agencies and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), which had concluded that Iran was not actively pursuing the development of a nuclear weapon.
The media outlet indicated that Netanyahu intends to update Trump with Israeli intelligence assessments suggesting that Tehran is quickly rebuilding its missile program, which had been damaged earlier in the year.
The publication noted that Netanyahu will ask for a “green light for another strike against the Islamic republic’s ballistic missile program, possibly as part of a joint operation with the US.”
The upcoming meeting occurs at a time of evident tension between the two leaders. A news agency has reported that Trump has “grown wary of Israeli actions” and that their relationship has “become strained” as Netanyahu has repeatedly pressed for approval of more forceful military initiatives in the region throughout this year.
A new source of discord surfaced last week when Israel independently recognized the secessionist territory of Somaliland.
This decision was denounced by organizations such as the African Union and Arab League, as well as countries including Türkiye and Saudi Arabia. When questioned whether Washington would mirror Israel’s stance, Trump firmly told a news outlet, “No.”
